4-13 Consequences

Consequences for bystander: Nothing except guilty conscious, if that.

" " victim: trauma, maybe leads to ptsd, depression, etc. Has a hard time with relationships, being intimate, trust and more. And all the fun of interviewing and getting evidence collected by hospital and law enforcement.

" " assailant: maybe thrown in jail for short amount of time. Sadly most rape cases dont have enough evidence to prosecute effectively

3-23 SAFE kits.

A rape kit or sexual assault forensic exam (SAFE) kit is done at a hospital. In Maryland it is done at the request of the victim now due to the "Jane Do Law", while before this year it was the police that gave them the go ahead on doing the kit. The SAFE kit is free for the victim, though the medical is not (i.e. treage and any medical help during exam).

"For a sexual assault evidence collection kit to be the most useful the victim should go to the hospital immediately following the attack. Changing clothes or bathing may result in destroying viable evidence. It is a victim's right to refuse to participate in any part of the evidence collection process, regardless of what stage the procedure is in. However, a sexual assault kit is the victim's best way to document the attack and help ensure prosecution of the attacker. The victim's informed consent is necessary for a kit to be used. This evidence retrieval and exam could take up to four hours to complete."--> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_kit

2-23 situation that sexual violence could happen

1. Party with alcohol
Few friends are drinking having a good time. One of which is a little more drunk than the rest of them. Her friend leads her back to her room and even though she says "no" she can't fully fight back due to the intoxication and he takes advantage of her. The next morning she doesn't fully know what happened because she was blacked out.

2. Close friend/ boyfriend/girlfriend, guilt you into sex/ take advantage
After dating several months the boyfriend (or g/f) could start trying to manipulate the other to have sex even if they are not ready/dont want to. After a while the other could just stop saying no, but yet there isnt consent for it. The aggressor takes advantage of this and sexually assaults their g/f or b/f. Though this is more grey than some other seinarios the aggresor is still taking advantage/ forcefully having the sex, but this method is more mental than physical force.

3. (less likely) Stranger forcefully raping someone walking by.
The seneario we all know from TV but is the rarest form of sexual violence. The stalker from town that we dont know is following us. Then jump us when we are not expecting it and forcefully rapes us.

4. Friend or aquantance just forcing rape.
You meet up with a person you knind of know from class or through friends. He or she forcefully (with violence) rapes you. This could also include a weapon of some kind. This is also less likely than the first two.

2-16 Bystander syndrome

Bystander syndrome is when a person or a group of people are witnesses to something, and dont do anything. The reasons for this is because of: public humiliation, fear of violence/ getting hurt, and "some one else's problem." People now are trying to train people in "Bystander intervention." This is where a person/ group of people stand up and help a person in trouble.

There are 4 things that you need to to help someone.
1. assess the problem.
2. make a call whether or not it is an emergancy and needs help
3. assume responsiblity
4. go help/ get help
